The US has been aggressively examining oily water separator usage during PSC examinations recently. As a result they have identified numerous operators who are improperly using or even by-passing their OWS’s while at sea. These operators have been prosecuted and signed plea agreements to implement auditing and compliance programs to ensure no future occurrences, in lieu of paying severe penalties. ECM has served as appointed independent auditor for numerous companies who have had to comply with these plea agreements, conducting both office and vessel audits. ECM has also assisted in preparation of Environmental Management System / Compliance Program (EMS/CP) manuals for government approval for these clients. Assistance with voluntary EMS/CP type compliance is also available for companies wishing to take a proactive approach to Environmental Compliance.
